I'm so sorry! Although the only thing I was responsible for was the lighting, and since the only gels the venue had were blue, red, and purple (yes, they bothered to put up purple gels on the lights instead of a new, useful color) it was suitably Macbethy, I suppose. I can't imagine how the other performances coped...

Drink every time someone fulfills that self-fulfilling prophecy a little more. And every time in between, times 10. I spent four years at uni in Edinburgh and Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer never came to put on a show while I was there. :( Lucky you!

(Also, this post gave me lots of happy memories about just how crazy the place gets during festival time. It often feels like there are more shows going on in the city than there are people around to see them. There's nowhere else quite like it.)Robofishnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1084418948126858292.post-44747891048164947512012-08-15T17:24:15.012-07:002012-08-15T17:24:15.012-07:00huh, no idea. check the festival guide. i saw it d...huh, no idea. check the festival guide. i saw it during review week, when it was cheaper.

report back if you do end up doing drunkbeth!!! hellotailornoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1084418948126858292.post-30201734874094949142012-08-15T17:18:29.706-07:002012-08-15T17:18:29.706-07:00Drunkbeth. Well, Drunkbeth is only really possible at th...LOL. Well, Drunkbeth is only really possible at the Fringe because there are like 3 straight productions of trad Macbeth ALONE, plus two (TWO!) Polish macbeths (the one i went to being one of them), at least one musical and one dance, and a couple more that are probably down under other names in other sections.

the other day i went to a show called shitfaced shakespeare, where they do the play straight (in this case, a midsummer night's dream), except before every performance they roll a dice and one of the actors has to get absolutely smashed. if the audience ever feels like the actor is getting too sober, they ring a bell and a butler comes on with more whisky. BEYOND HILARIOUS. when i went to see it demetrius was drunk, and towards the end pulled me, toomuchblor and nancy down onto the stage to take a nap with him in the middle of a scene. ;DD

re: the macbeth witches that look like terrifying nuns -- they're on stilts, and they're actually creepy as fuck. the play is all outdoors at night, in the quad of the old college, and all the fire etc was very atmospheric. the reason we went to it in the first place was because the witches advertised by loping down the Royal Mile in those costumes, stepping OVER passers-by and rattling deafening rattles for attention, while the human-sized men in muddy armour handed out fliers to tourists. TERRIFYING. most of the performance was physical theatre including a lot of fire, nudity and violence, plus motorcycles. and it was very loud. at one point the giant stilt-walking witches pushed around a kind of giant rusty lawnmower thing full of severed heads. about 90% of the dialogue had been cut, leaving a few lines behind, mic'd up a few hundred decibels and pronounced in thick Polish accents.

p.s. thank you! :) i wish i could've taken better photos, but c'est la vie.hellotailornoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1084418948126858292.post-55872359573305014132012-08-15T15:32:18.759-07:002012-08-15T15:32:18.759-07:00DRUNKBETH. If grad school hadn't forced my nose to the grind stone for the rest of the month I would have loved to have gotten away to the Fringe, if only for a week.

I did manage to see most of that production of Rime of the Ancient Mariner when it played outside the National Theatre a couple of months ago. Not exactly what I was expecting but some of the aerial work was really impressive.Bennoreply@blogger.com
